This article demonstrated a straightforward method for checking the phone numbers linked to your National Identification Number (NIN). This process is crucial for ensuring your personal information is secure and preventing unauthorized access to your NIN. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Dial the USSD Code

Using any mobile phone with an active Nigerian SIM card, open your phone’s dialer and dial the following code: *996#

Step 2: Select “View NIN Status”

After dialing the code, a menu will appear on your screen. Look for the option labeled “View NIN Status” (usually option 4) and select it.

Step 3: Choose “View Numbers Linked to NIN”

The system will present two additional options. Select the second option, “View Numbers Linked to NIN.”

Step 4: Receive SMS Notification

Once you’ve made your selection, you’ll receive an SMS from the system containing the phone numbers currently linked to your NIN.

Step 5: Verify the Numbers

Carefully review the list of linked numbers. If you notice any phone number that is unfamiliar or not yours, report it immediately to your service provider or the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Unauthorized numbers linked to your NIN could indicate potential fraud or misuse of your identity.

Why This Matters

In Nigeria, your NIN is a critical piece of personal information used for various purposes, including accessing government services, opening bank accounts, and registering SIM cards. Ensuring that only your authorized phone numbers are linked to your NIN helps protect your identity and prevents potential fraud.

Spread the Word

This information is vital for every Nigerian. Share this guide with your friends and family to help protect their NIN and personal information. Fraudulent activities are on the rise, and vigilance is key to safeguarding your identity.

By following these steps, you can ensure your NIN remains secure and free from unauthorized access.
