Fact–Check: Exposing the Fake “OPAY @7 Anniversary ₦5k Giveaway” Scam

A fraudulent promotion claiming that OPay is giving ₦5,000 cash bonuses to all customers for its 7th anniversary is circulating with the link:  https://cut-ly.com/opay@7-5k-giveaway

Users are prompted to answer questions and share the link to claim the supposed giveaway.

What the claim says:

  • Guaranteed Cash Bonus: All (new and existing) OPay users will receive ₦5,000 instantly.
  • Anniversary Hook: The giveaway is timed to celebrate OPay’s 7th anniversary.
  • Easy Access: Recipients are told to answer a few questions and click the link to claim the money.

Why this is false:

  1. No Giveaway by OPay
Established fact-checkers and OPay itself have previously warned that there are no ongoing anniversary giveaways—neither 5th, 6th, nor 7th—using external links or requiring sharing via WhatsApp or other apps
  2. Repeat Scam Pattern
Similar fraudulent schemes appeared during previous “anniversary” and holiday promotions (‘Eid al-Kabir’, ‘New Year’), requiring users to share links, enter personal data, and install apps—none of which led to actual payouts
  3. Untrustworthy Domain & Mechanism
Reputable companies like OPay use secure, official platforms (e.g., opayweb.com) for verified promotions. The use of cut-ly.com redirection and asking users to share links before claiming the bonus are classic hallmarks of phishing or data-harvesting scams .

How to Stay Safe:

  • Ignore and do not click such links.
  • Verify promotions through OPay’s official channels: their website, their app, or their verified social media pages.
  • Avoid sharing personal information or forwarding suspicious offers.
  • Report scam content to OPay, or register complaints with authorities like the Consumer Protection Council or EFCC.

Final Verdict:

The “OPAY @7 Anniversary ₦5k Giveaway” is a fake scam designed to trick users into disclosing personal data or spreading malware. OPay has not endorsed or launched any such offer, so these messages should be ignored and deleted.

Stay alert, share this warning, and protect yourself from online scams!
